DirectionsThe write-up
A nineteenth-century tobacco merchant employed men for decades to dig an enormous network of brick-vaulted tunnels under Edge hill, and nobody has ever established why. No ore, no drainage, no cellar. Volunteers have been digging the infill out by hand since the 1990s and are still not at the bottom. The guided section is a fraction of it; the rest is rubble and speculation.
- Best window
- Year round — it's 12°c down there regardless.
- Watch out
- Hard hat sections are hard hat sections for a reason. The volunteers will tell you where not to stand; listen.
- Access
- Someone owns it and will say yes if you ask. Ask.

Dated, because conditions rot. Newest first.

The volunteer-run entrance does a longer tour than the heritage centre one and costs less. Book by email, they're slow to reply but they do.
